Description
The Oriental beetle (Exomala orientalis), formerly classified as Anomala orientalis, is a significant member of the Scarabaeidae family, order Coleoptera. Originally native to Eastern Asia, this pest has become a primary concern for turf managers and agriculturalists due to its ability to decimate root systems in various environmental conditions.
This beetle species targets a diverse array of hosts, including turfgrasses, ornamental nursery stock, and various fruit-bearing shrubs. The larvae are notorious for their underground activity, feeding extensively on root hairs and fibrous roots, which severely compromises the physiological stability and water uptake capabilities of the affected plants.
The biology of Exomala orientalis involves an egg, three larval instars, a pupal stage, and an adult stage. Larvae overwinter deep in the soil profile, migrating toward the surface during warmer spring months to resume intensive feeding. Adult beetles emerge in early summer, engaging in mating rituals and laying eggs in preferred soil conditions near the roots of host plants.
The primary damage caused by the Oriental beetle manifests as localized patches of chlorotic, wilted, or dead turf that can be easily pulled away from the soil, resembling a loose carpet. Beyond turf, the grubs can cause significant economic loss in high-value nurseries by reducing the vitality of root balls, leading to stunted plant growth or total mortality.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this beetle involves biological controls such as applying Heterorhabditis bacteriophora nematodes, which actively seek out and parasitize the grubs in the soil. Proper cultural practices, including adequate irrigation management to minimize favorable egg-laying sites and the use of physical barriers or targeted insecticide applications, remain essential components of a successful control program.
