Description

The genus Exopholis is a group of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are well-known soil pests, primarily causing agricultural damage during their larval stage, which develops underground and feeds on the root systems of various crops.

These pests target a variety of plant species, ranging from sugar cane to fruit orchards and forestry nurseries. In intensive farming, Exopholis can cause significant economic losses, particularly by destroying the young roots of nursery seedlings, which often leads to the death of the plants.

The biology of Exopholis involves a complete metamorphosis, including egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult beetle stages. Adult beetles are typically nocturnal and feed on foliage, while larvae remain buried in the soil. The duration of the development cycle can vary depending on soil moisture and ambient temperature conditions.

Damage caused by these larvae is often difficult to detect until the plant starts showing signs of wilting or death. Infected plants show symptoms of nutrient deficiency because the root system is decimated by the grubs. In extreme cases, the soil root zone is destroyed to such an extent that the plant can be easily pulled out of the ground.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling Exopholis. Effective measures include:

  • Deep mechanical tillage to disturb the soil environment;
  • Application of soil-incorporated insecticides;
  • Utilization of bio-control agents such as entomopathogenic fungi or nematodes;
  • Crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
