Description

The multispinous mealybug (Farinococcus multispinosus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a specialized sap-sucking pest that poses a significant threat to various greenhouse, ornamental, and tropical plant species by depleting their nutrient reserves.

This pest primarily attacks the succulent parts of the plant, including young shoots, leaf axils, and developing flower buds. Its feeding activity causes severe physiological stress to the host, resulting in stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and, in severe cases, the complete dieback of affected plant tissues.

The biology of Farinococcus multispinosus consists of distinct developmental stages: eggs, mobile crawlers, and sedentary adults. Adult females are protected by a white waxy secretion, which acts as a barrier against many contact insecticides. The life cycle is typically synchronized with warm, humid conditions, allowing for multiple generations per year.

Infestation is easily identifiable by the presence of white, cotton-like masses on the stems and leaves. Beyond the direct damage caused by sap extraction, the mealybug excretes honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This fungal growth inhibits photosynthesis and further weakens the plant's health.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions. Key measures include:

  • Strict quarantine of newly introduced plants;
  • Systematic monitoring of crop health;
  • Application of systemic insecticides that target sucking pests;
