Cuban sweet potato weevil

The Cuban sweet potato weevil (Faustinus cubae) is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is considered a primary pest of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) crops in its endemic ranges throughout the Caribbean and Central America, posing a significant risk to food security and agricultural productivity.

This weevil primarily damages sweet potato plants. The larval stage of the insect is the most destructive, as larvae tunnel directly into the tubers and stems. These excavations destroy the internal structure of the storage roots, making the crop unsightly and unmarketable, often rendering even lightly infested batches completely unfit for human consumption due to contamination and decay.

The life cycle of Faustinus cubae is perfectly adapted to the host plant. The female weevil oviposits into the stems or tubers near the soil surface. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding within the plant tissue. Throughout their growth, they remain inside the host, completing their pupation cycle within the hollowed-out tunnels of the tuber or stem before emerging as adults.

The economic impact of this pest is severe because it causes both direct weight loss and secondary quality degradation. Once the tunnels are established, they create entry points for opportunistic bacteria and fungi, which rapidly colonize the wounded tissue. This results in soft rot, rendering the harvested tubers susceptible to rapid spoilage during storage and transit to market.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to mitigate the damage caused by this weevil include:

• Using only certified, weevil-free cuttings for propagation.
• Implementing strict crop rotation protocols to break the lifecycle of the pest.
• Removing and destroying all post-harvest debris where larvae and pupae may survive.
• Applying systemic insecticides or biological controls when monitoring reveals threshold-level infestations.
