Elongate hemlock scale

The Elongate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa) is a destructive sucking insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. Recognized as a significant invasive pest, it primarily targets various conifer species, causing severe decline in both forest ecosystems and ornamental nursery stock.

This pest mainly infests the hemlock (Tsuga spp.), but it is also frequently found on fir, spruce, and pine trees. The insects typically settle on the undersides of the needles, making them difficult to detect until the infestation is well-established. Over time, the scale insects can colonize twigs and branches, leading to a massive drain on the plant's resources.

The life cycle of Fiorinia externa is highly dependent on environmental temperatures, typically producing two generations per year in temperate climates. Fertilized females overwinter under their protective waxy covers. As spring arrives, they lay eggs that hatch into crawlers. These mobile nymphs are the primary dispersal stage; they move across the plant before settling down to feed and develop their own scale cover.

The damage caused by the scale manifests as chlorotic mottling, yellowing, and eventual shedding of needles. Heavy infestations result in premature needle drop, crown thinning, and reduced growth rates. The cumulative effect of sap removal and toxin injection weakens the trees, leaving them prone to secondary infections from diseases or attack by wood-boring insects.
