Ghost scale

The ghost scale (Fiorinia phantasma) is a destructive species of scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae. It derives its common name from the female's translucent, elongated test (shell), which blends into the leaf surface, making it notoriously difficult for nursery managers and plant owners to detect before a significant infestation has established.

This pest primarily infests tropical and subtropical ornamental plants, demonstrating a strong preference for Ficus species, particularly Ficus benjamina. It also thrives on various indoor and greenhouse plants including Codiaeum (crotons) and Dracaena, often spreading rapidly through the trade of infested nursery stock across various climatic zones.

The life cycle begins with eggs deposited under the protective scale of the adult female. The primary dispersal stage is the crawler (first-instar nymph), which is highly mobile and can crawl short distances or be transported via wind currents and human contact. Once a crawler settles on a suitable site, it inserts its mouthparts into the plant tissue and begins its stationary feeding phase, secreting the protective waxy covering.

Feeding damage occurs as the insects extract phloem sap from the leaves. This leads to severe chlorosis, characterized by irregular yellow spotting or stippling on the leaves. In high-density populations, the accumulation of toxic saliva and nutrient depletion leads to premature leaf drop, dieback of twigs, and eventually, the total collapse of the host plant if the infestation remains untreated.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this scale insect effectively:

• Implementation of strict nursery hygiene and visual scouting programs.
• Use of systemic insecticides applied as soil drenches or foliar sprays.
• Application of horticultural oils to physically suffocate the sessile adults and nymphs.
• Introduction of biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps, in protected greenhouse environments.
