Fiorinia proboscidaria

Fiorinia proboscidaria is a species of armored scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae, order Hemiptera. These pests are known for their sessile lifestyle, where adult females remain fixed to the host plant surface, protected by a hard, waxy cover (scale) that makes them resistant to various environmental stresses and contact chemicals.

The host range of this pest primarily includes a variety of ornamental and tropical foliage plants. It is frequently found on citrus, ficus, and various evergreen species within greenhouse and conservatory environments. Due to the controlled climate of such indoor spaces, the pest can undergo multiple overlapping generations throughout the year.

The biological cycle starts with eggs laid under the female's protective scale. Upon hatching, the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge. Crawlers are the only active life stage; they move across the plant surface to find suitable feeding sites or are dispersed by wind or physical contact to neighboring plants, initiating new infestations.

The damage caused by Fiorinia proboscidaria is primarily due to sap-sucking activity. As they feed, they inject saliva into the plant tissues, which often leads to chlorosis, leaf yellowing, stunting, and premature abscission of foliage. In severe cases, the cumulative loss of nutrients severely weakens the plant, making it susceptible to secondary pathogens and environmental stress.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling this pest involve:

• Regular monitoring of host plants, focusing on the undersides of leaves and leaf axils.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant parts to reduce the initial population density.
• Application of systemic insecticides or horticultural oils to suffocate and eliminate the scales.
• Maintaining plant vigor through appropriate fertilization and watering to improve natural defenses.
