Froggattiella penicillata

Froggattiella penicillata is a specialized scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae. It is recognized as a significant pest of woody plants, particularly those belonging to the Myrtaceae family, often found in environments where host plants are densely cultivated for ornamental or forestry purposes.

The host range of this insect primarily includes species of Eucalyptus and related genera. By anchoring itself onto the bark and young shoots of the plant, the pest creates a protected environment that makes it resilient to many traditional environmental stressors and minor interventions.

The life cycle begins with the egg stage, followed by the mobile crawler stage. During the crawler phase, the insect is highly active and can be dispersed by wind or physical contact with tools and machinery. Once a suitable feeding site is located, the insect settles, loses its mobility, and secretes a protective scale covering.

Damage to the host is caused by the extraction of phloem sap. As the insect feeds, it injects toxins that disrupt the plant's vascular system, leading to necrosis of the bark, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the complete dieback of branches. These wounds can also serve as entry points for secondary pathogens.

To effectively manage populations of Froggattiella penicillata, integrated pest management (IPM) is essential. This includes:

• Regular monitoring of twigs and bark for signs of infestation;
• Pruning and destruction of heavily infested plant material;
• Application of horticultural oils to suffocate the insects;
• Use of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence period.
