Shrub snail

Fruticicola

Description

The shrub snail (Fruticicola) belongs to the Hygromiidae family and is a type of terrestrial gastropod mollusk. While often found in natural habitats, it is frequently classified as an agricultural pest due to its ability to feed on various cultivated plants. These snails thrive in humid microclimates, making them particularly problematic in irrigated gardens and nurseries.

This pest affects a broad range of crops, including leafy vegetables, strawberries, tomatoes, and various ornamental plants. By feeding primarily at night or during overcast, rainy days, they can cause significant foliage loss in a very short time. Their impact is most severe on young seedlings, which may be completely defoliated or destroyed in early spring.

The biology of Fruticicola is driven by high humidity requirements. They are hermaphroditic and lay clutches of eggs in damp soil, under debris, or within dense vegetation. The offspring reach maturity within a few months, depending on environmental temperatures. They survive harsh winters by retreating into deep soil cracks or dense mulch layers, re-emerging in early spring to continue their feeding cycle.

The harm caused by these snails is characterized by large, irregular holes in leaves and stalks. Their presence is easily identified by silvery mucus trails left on plants and the ground. Beyond direct tissue destruction, the mucus and excrement contaminate harvests and create conditions conducive to bacterial and fungal rot, significantly reducing the market value of the produce.

Protection strategies are essential for effective management:

  • Maintaining field hygiene by removing decaying vegetation and weeds.
  • Deep tillage and soil cultivation to disrupt snail habitats and expose eggs to predators or desiccation.
  • Installing physical barriers such as crushed eggshells, sand, or copper tape around high-value crops.
  • Using molluscicides (often iron phosphate-based) as part of an integrated pest management plan during peak infestation periods.
