Furchadiaspis

Furchadiaspis is a genus of armored scale insects belonging to the family Diaspididae. These pests are specialized insects that live fixed to the plant surface, protected by a hard, waxy shield (scale) that they secrete. Due to this protective covering, they are often resistant to many conventional contact insecticides and remain unnoticed until the infestation is severe.

The primary hosts of Furchadiaspis are various conifer species, particularly those in the Cupressaceae family, such as Thuja and Juniper. They are commonly found in commercial nurseries, botanical gardens, and residential landscapes, where they can thrive on the foliage and thin bark of young trees, causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage.

The life cycle of the pest involves several stages, with the most critical being the crawler stage. Crawlers are mobile, newly hatched nymphs that move across the plant's surface to find a suitable feeding site. Once they settle, they lose their mobility, insert their mouthparts into the plant tissue to feed, and begin constructing their protective scale covering.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily due to the extraction of plant sap. As the insects feed, they inject toxic saliva, which leads to chlorosis, yellowing, and eventually the browning of the needles. In cases of heavy infestation, the plant experiences reduced growth, branch dieback, and in extreme cases, total plant mortality.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to ensure long-term control:

• Regular monitoring of host plants for the presence of scales on needles and stems.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the overall pest density.
• Application of systemic insecticides that are taken up by the plant's vascular system.
• Timely spraying during the crawler emergence phase using horticultural oils or specialized insecticides.
