Gascardia is a genus of insects belonging to the family Coccidae (soft scales) within the order Hemiptera. These pests are notorious for forming dense colonies on various plant parts, which presents significant challenges for pest management in both commercial horticulture and ornamental gardening.

This pest primarily infests woody and shrubby crops, including citrus trees, coffee plants, and various tropical ornamental species. Damage typically occurs on branches, trunks, and the undersides of leaves, where the insects pierce the plant tissue to suck out essential cellular sap.

The biology of Gascardia is defined by its development under a protective shield formed by larval secretions. The life cycle involves an egg stage, several larval instars (known as crawlers), and the adult stage. The dispersal of the species occurs mainly during the crawler stage, as they move actively across the host or are carried by wind to neighboring plants.

Damage symptoms include general plant decline, chlorosis (yellowing), premature leaf drop, and shoot malformation. Furthermore, Gascardia produces honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi, further weakening the plant and significantly reducing both its aesthetic appeal and agricultural productivity.
