Systematic position and description: Gascardia brevicauda (syn. Ceroplastes brevicauda) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. This scale insect is characterized by a thick, white, waxy secretion that covers the body of the adult female, providing high resistance to environmental stress and chemical treatments.

Host plants: The species is a significant pest of citrus crops, including lemons, limes, and oranges. It also demonstrates a wide host range, infesting various ornamental shrubs and trees, which makes it a persistent nuisance in both commercial agriculture and urban landscaping.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of eggs, mobile crawlers (larvae), and sedentary adult females. The females remain attached to the plant surface throughout their adult life, producing eggs underneath their waxy shell. The crawler stage is the most critical for dispersal, as these tiny nymphs wander to new growth to establish feeding sites.

Type of damage and economic impact: Feeding by Gascardia brevicauda extracts vital plant sap, resulting in branch dieback, leaf chlorosis, and significantly reduced fruit yield. A major secondary effect is the production of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth, coating leaves and fruit and drastically inhibiting photosynthesis.

Protection measures: Management of this pest requires an integrated strategy to minimize chemical usage and enhance sustainability:

• Application of horticultural oils during the crawler emergence phase to suffocate the insects.
• Utilizing systemic insecticides to penetrate the waxy protective layer.
• Pruning infested branches to reduce population density within the canopy.
• Conservation and release of biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps that specifically target scale insects.
