Description
Systematic position: The Lappet moth (Gastropacha quercifolia) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lasiocampidae. It is a large nocturnal moth known for its remarkable ability to mimic a withered brown leaf when at rest, providing excellent camouflage against predators.
Host plants: This pest is a polyphagous insect that targets various deciduous trees. It is particularly damaging to orchards, frequently infesting apple, pear, plum, cherry, and hawthorn trees. By feeding on both cultivated and wild host plants, it can easily migrate from nearby woodlands into commercial orchards.
Biology and lifecycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. Larvae spend the winter in early growth stages, hiding within bark crevices or near the base of the trunk. As temperatures rise in spring, they resume feeding on developing buds and young leaves. Pupation occurs in early summer inside a dense cocoon attached to branches or foliage, followed by the emergence of adults in mid-summer.
Nature of damage and economic impact: The larvae are voracious eaters. During peak infestation years, they can cause severe defoliation, skeletonizing the leaves. This extensive damage drains the tree of vital nutrients, leading to reduced vigor, increased susceptibility to diseases, and a significant decrease in fruit production quality and quantity.
Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for control. Mechanical practices include clearing loose bark to remove overwintering sites. Biological control, such as promoting natural predators like birds and parasitic wasps, is highly encouraged. In severe cases, targeted application of environmentally safe insecticides during the larval feeding stage is the most effective way to prevent economic loss.
