Lappet moth

Systematic position: The Lappet moth (Gastropacha quercifolia) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Lasiocampidae. It is a large, robust moth distinguished by its unique resting posture, where it folds its wings to perfectly mimic a withered, curled leaf, providing remarkable camouflage against predators.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets trees and shrubs belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is a significant threat to apple, pear, plum, cherry, and apricot trees. Occasionally, it also attacks various forest tree species such as oak, willow, and poplar, which can serve as reservoirs for the pest population near fruit-growing areas.

Biology and life cycle: The moth typically produces one generation per year. It overwinters as a young larva, sheltering in bark crevices or attached to twigs. With the arrival of spring, the caterpillars resume feeding on buds and emerging foliage. They mature by late spring and pupate inside a tough, silk cocoon. Adult moths emerge throughout the summer months, from late June to August, to lay eggs on the undersides of leaves.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The caterpillars are voracious feeders. Early instars cause small holes in leaves, while older larvae consume the entire leaf lamina, often leaving only the main veins. Widespread infestation causes severe defoliation, which drains the tree's energy reserves, stunts fruit development, and leaves the trees highly susceptible to secondary infections and winter frost damage.

Control measures: Management strategies emphasize early detection and manual intervention. Gardeners are advised to inspect trees during the dormant season and early spring to remove larvae or egg clusters manually. If chemical intervention is necessary, apply biological insecticides, such as those based on Bacillus thuringiensis, or approved systemic insecticides during the peak larval feeding stages, strictly following safety regulations.
