Spruce gall adelgid

The spruce gall adelgid (Gilletteella) is a genus of insects belonging to the family Adelgidae, order Hemiptera. These specialized pests are known for inducing abnormal plant tissue growth, commonly referred to as galls, on spruce trees. They are considered significant pests in both forestry and ornamental tree maintenance due to their ability to deform foliage and stunt tree growth.

Various spruce species, particularly Norway spruce and blue spruce, serve as primary hosts for these insects. The feeding process, which involves piercing plant tissues to extract sap, causes physiological stress to the tree. This depletion of nutrients, combined with the structural damage caused by gall formation, significantly reduces the aesthetic and overall health of the affected conifers.

The life cycle of the spruce gall adelgid is complex and often involves multiple generations, with specific stages occurring at different times of the year. Overwintering typically occurs in the nymph stage at the base of buds or within bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, these nymphs mature and initiate the formation of galls by stimulating the plant tissues as they feed on developing needles.

The most recognizable symptom of a Gilletteella infestation is the presence of cone-like galls on the branches. These galls start as green, fleshy structures and turn brown as they mature and open to release the next generation of insects. Foliage affected by the feeding insects becomes discolored, distorted, and eventually falls off, leading to sparse crown development and potential branch dieback in severe cases.
