Description
Systematic position: The poppy stem weevil (scientific name Glocianus maculaalba) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly specialized pest that exclusively targets plants within the Papaver genus.
Host crops: The primary host is the opium or oilseed poppy (Papaver somniferum). Both cultivated fields and wild-growing poppy populations can serve as breeding grounds, facilitating the spread of the insect to agricultural lands.
Biology and life cycle: The adults hibernate in the soil or under organic debris during the winter months. As temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge and begin feeding on young leaves. Females subsequently lay eggs within the tissues of the poppy stems or flower stalks. Larvae develop inside the stem, feeding on internal tissues before moving back into the soil to pupate.
