Poppy stem weevil

The poppy stem weevil (Latin: Glocianus marginatus) is a specialized pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This beetle is recognized as a significant threat to poppy plantations, capable of causing localized economic damage by weakening the structural integrity and growth potential of the cultivated poppy plants.

The primary host for this pest is the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) and related species within the Papaveraceae family. Unlike generalist pests, Glocianus marginatus relies heavily on the physiological stages of the poppy plant to complete its lifecycle, which makes the crop particularly vulnerable during its early growth and stem development phases.

The biological cycle begins when overwintering adults emerge from the soil in spring. After a period of feeding on foliage, females deposit eggs directly into the plant tissue, typically within the stalks or leaf petioles. The developing larvae tunnel inside the stems, where they feed on inner tissues, often remaining hidden from external predators and superficial pesticide applications.

The damage caused by the larvae is primarily internal. As they tunnel through the pith of the stem, they cause significant structural deformities, such as curvature and swelling of the stalks. These physical injuries impede the vascular system of the plant, leading to stunted development, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by pathogens, which often result in premature plant wilting.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the population density of the pest:

• Implementation of crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
• Deep autumn plowing to disturb the soil where pupation occurs.
• Strict field hygiene, including the removal and destruction of crop residues after harvest.
• Targeted application of systemic insecticides during the critical period when adults are active but before egg-laying occurs.
