Description

Systematic position. Gnathotrichus deleoni belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is widely recognized as a type of ambrosia beetle that creates galleries within the wood of coniferous species, causing significant economic losses in forestry.

Host range. The pest primarily targets coniferous trees, specifically various species of pine and spruce. It is highly attracted to fresh logs, fallen trees, and standing timber that has been weakened by drought, disease, or fire, making it a critical threat to newly harvested forest products.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this beetle is highly specialized. Unlike bark beetles that consume the phloem, Gnathotrichus deleoni adults excavate tunnels into the sapwood to cultivate ambrosia fungi. Larvae develop within these galleries, feeding exclusively on the fungal mycelium that grows on the tunnel walls.

Nature of damage. The activity of these beetles results in small, round entrance holes on the surface of the wood. Internally, the galleries cause characteristic dark staining of the surrounding timber tissue due to the fungal growth. This staining, often called "blue stain," significantly degrades the structural and aesthetic value of the lumber.

Protection measures. Integrated pest management is essential to mitigate damage caused by this beetle.
