Description
Systematic position. The species belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is recognized as an ambrosia beetle, which depends on a symbiotic relationship with specialized fungi to survive and develop within woody tissues.
Host plants. The primary targets are coniferous species, particularly Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies. The beetle preferentially infests weakened trees, fresh stumps, logging residues, and lumber stored in forest environments, where it exploits the moisture content of the wood.
Biology and life cycle. Adults are small, cylindrical, measuring approximately 3 mm in length, with a dark brown coloration. They bore deep into the heartwood, constructing maternal galleries where they cultivate symbiotic ambrosia fungi. These fungi serve as the sole source of nutrients for the beetle's larvae.
Character of damage and harmfulness. The economic damage is caused by the boring of deep radial tunnels into the wood, which degrades the quality of timber products. The fungal growth causes deep black staining along the gallery walls, rendering the wood unsuitable for high-quality structural or aesthetic applications.
