Description
Systematic position. This species belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. Like other ambrosia beetles, it exhibits a unique symbiotic relationship with fungi, which serves as the primary food source for both larvae and adults rather than the wood itself.
Host plants and damage targets. The beetle primarily infests coniferous trees, particularly species of the genera Pinus, Picea, and Abies. It frequently attacks weakened, stressed, or wind-thrown trees, as well as logs and freshly sawn timber stored in forest environments.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle revolves around the galleries excavated by adults deep into the wood. The beetles carry fungal spores into these tunnels, where the fungus colonizes the gallery walls. Larvae develop within these chambers, grazing on the fungal mycelium cultivated by their parents, ensuring efficient nutrient uptake in the wood environment.
Damage and pest significance. The damage is primarily aesthetic and structural for the timber industry. The galleries are often stained dark by the symbiotic fungi, creating defects known as "black check" or "ambrosia spots." This significantly reduces the economic value of timber, leading to substantial financial losses in wood production and trade.
