Host plants. This species primarily attacks coniferous tree species, including various types of fir (Abies), spruce (Picea), and pine (Pinus). The pest prefers weakened, stressed, or recently felled trees, though it can infest seemingly healthy trees if the population density in the area is significantly high.

Biology and life cycle. These beetles exhibit an ambrosia-like lifestyle: they bore tunnels into the wood and introduce symbiotic fungi. These fungi colonize the tunnel walls and serve as the primary food source for the developing larvae. The development rate is highly dependent on wood moisture content and ambient temperature, with the generation cycle lasting from several months to a full year.

Damage patterns and pest impact. The primary damage consists of a complex network of tunnels bored into the sapwood and heartwood. These tunnels compromise the structural integrity of the timber. Furthermore, the associated fungal growth causes deep staining (bluestain) of the wood, which significantly reduces the economic value of the timber and complicates wood processing and industrial utilization.
