Gnathotrupes is a genus of bark beetles belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae within the Curculionidae family. As members of the order Coleoptera, these insects are specialized xylophages, meaning they spend the majority of their life cycle feeding within the woody tissues of trees, which directly impacts their health and stability.

These pests primarily infest a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees. They are particularly drawn to trees that are already stressed by environmental factors such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or mechanical injury. Nurseries and managed forests are the most common environments where Gnathotrupes populations can reach damaging levels.

The life cycle of Gnathotrupes follows a typical holometabolous development, comprising egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adult beetles bore through the bark to create galleries where they lay eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae continue to excavate tunnels in the phloem and xylem, consuming the nutrient-rich layers of the tree.

The damage is characterized by the presence of small entrance holes on the bark and piles of frass, or "boring dust," at the base of the tree or in bark crevices. This tunneling activity disrupts the tree's vascular system, preventing the movement of water and nutrients, which ultimately leads to canopy dieback or the death of the host tree.
