Systematic position. Gnathotrupes longiusculus is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. This beetle is a specialized wood-boring pest that completes its life cycle within the tissues of host trees, making detection and control particularly challenging.

Host plants. The species primarily infests various woody plant species. While it often targets weakened trees, under favorable conditions for the pest, it can also infest healthy stands. It is frequently associated with forest ecosystems and may cause significant damage in managed plantations.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Gnathotrupes longiusculus is entirely dependent on its host. Adults bore through the bark to establish galleries where eggs are deposited. Upon hatching, larvae feed on the cambium and inner wood layers, creating complex tunnel networks that persist until the insects pupate and emerge as mature adults.

Nature of damage. The beetle's activity disrupts the tree’s vascular system, preventing the flow of nutrients and water. Typical indicators of an infestation include the presence of fine wood dust (frass) on the bark surface and resin exudation. Continued boring activity weakens the tree structure and provides entry points for wood-decaying fungi, often leading to canopy dieback or tree mortality.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Key strategies include:
