Systematic position: The Eucalyptus snout beetle (Gonipterus gibberus) is a coleopteran insect belonging to the Curculionidae family. It is recognized as a significant invasive pest that causes severe damage to eucalyptus plantations globally, posing a major threat to both commercial forestry and ornamental plantings.

Host plants: The pest feeds exclusively on species of the genus Eucalyptus. Both adults and larvae demonstrate a high degree of specialization, attacking young leaves, shoots, and buds, which directly impacts the growth and health of the trees, leading to economic losses in wood production industries.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of the beetle consists of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay clusters of eggs on leaves, which they seal with a protective fecal covering. Larvae undergo several instars while feeding on foliage before dropping to the soil to pupate. Depending on climate, the species can produce multiple generations annually, leading to rapid population outbreaks.

Damage and pest status: Adults create characteristic notches along the edges of leaves, while larvae consume the leaf tissue between veins, resulting in a skeletonized appearance. Heavy infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which causes significant growth reduction, dieback of the terminal shoots, and can ultimately result in the death of stressed trees.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling G. gibberus. The most successful strategy has been biological control, specifically the release of the egg parasitoid Anaphes nitens, which has significantly reduced beetle populations in many infested regions. Chemical control is generally restricted to nursery settings due to the scale and height of mature eucalyptus trees.
