Description
The eucalyptus snout beetle (Gonipterus scutellatus) is a significant coleopteran pest belonging to the Curculionidae family. Originating from Australia, it has become a major global threat to eucalyptus plantations, challenging the health and growth of various eucalyptus species worldwide.
The primary hosts for this insect are various species of the genus Eucalyptus. Both the adult beetles and the larvae actively feed on the foliage, with young trees and nursery saplings being particularly vulnerable to severe defoliation which can stunt growth or lead to tree mortality.
The biological development of Gonipterus scutellatus proceeds through four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the leaves, encased in a protective secretion. Upon hatching, the larvae consume leaf tissue, progressing through several instars before pupating in the soil.
The damage caused by this pest is distinctive. Adults create irregular, notched margins on the leaves, while larvae skeletonize the leaf surfaces. Severe infestations result in extensive defoliation, canopy loss, and increased susceptibility of trees to secondary pests and environmental stressors.
