Dock bug

The dock bug (Gonocerus acuteangulatus) is a species of insect belonging to the Coreidae family, order Hemiptera. While historically considered a nuisance, it has become recognized as a notable pest in various agricultural and horticultural settings, impacting both ornamental plants and fruit crops.

The host range of the dock bug is quite diverse. It frequently feeds on species within the Rosaceae family, such as hazel, apple, and hawthorn, as well as various herbaceous plants. By utilizing its piercing-sucking mouthparts, the insect extracts sap from the vascular system of the host plant, causing stress and developmental issues.

The life cycle consists of the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insect overwinters as an adult, seeking shelter under dense vegetation or leaf litter. Once temperatures rise in the spring, the insects emerge, feed on early buds and foliage, and commence mating, followed by egg-laying on the undersides of leaves.

Feeding activity leads to distinctive damage patterns, including necrotic spots on leaves and stems, fruit malformation, and premature fruit drop. Young nymphs are particularly destructive as they aggregate on developing fruits and shoots, which can significantly hinder the growth of the plant and decrease yield quality.

Managing the dock bug requires an integrated pest management strategy. Cultural practices, such as maintaining weed-free rows and removing overwintering sites like debris piles, are essential. If population levels exceed economic thresholds, growers should utilize targeted chemical applications or bio-rational insecticides during the early nymphal stages for maximum efficacy.
