Willow felt scale

Willow felt scale (Gossyparia salicicola) is an insect species belonging to the family Eriococcidae. It is a specialized pest that exclusively targets trees within the Salix genus. This insect is a significant concern for both commercial willow plantations and landscape architecture, where its presence can compromise the health and aesthetic value of the trees.

The host range is centered on various species of willow, particularly those with smooth bark where colonies can easily establish. The insect is often overlooked in early stages because its morphology and protective secretions allow it to blend in with the texture of the bark, particularly around bud scales and crotches of branches.

The biological cycle typically completes one generation per year. Winter is spent as second-instar nymphs sheltered within bark fissures. As temperatures rise in early spring, these nymphs move to favorable feeding sites on current-year or previous-year growth. By early summer, females reach maturity, form characteristic white felt-like ovisacs, and deposit eggs, ensuring the next cycle of the population.

Damage caused by this pest is primarily physiological. By extracting large quantities of sap, the insects weaken the tree, leading to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and premature leaf drop. In severe infestations, branches can become necrotic and die back. This physiological stress makes the trees more susceptible to secondary wood-boring insects and fungal pathogens.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for the emergence of crawlers in late spring is critical for the timing of chemical interventions.
