The cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) is a member of the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae. It is a highly polymorphic species with both winged and wingless forms, which allows for efficient colonization of host plants. The ability to reproduce via parthenogenesis allows populations to explode in numbers in a very short period, making it a persistent agricultural pest.
Host plants
This aphid species is a major polyphage, impacting a wide variety of crops worldwide. It is primarily known as a devastating pest for cotton and cucurbits (cucumbers, melons, watermelons), but it also poses a serious threat to Solanaceae crops like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, especially within greenhouse environments where conditions remain stable year-round.
Damage and economic impact
The damage is caused by aphids piercing plant tissues and extracting sap, which leads to stunted growth, leaf curling, and chlorosis. Their excreta, known as honeydew, encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks light and impairs photosynthesis. Furthermore, the cotton aphid is a highly efficient vector for several plant viruses, which can lead to total crop failure if left unmanaged.
Lifecycle
In warm climates, the cotton aphid can reproduce continuously without a sexual phase. One generation can develop in as little as 7–10 days under favorable conditions. As temperatures drop, the aphids may move to sheltered areas or weeds, ensuring their survival. The rapid turnover of generations makes it difficult to control populations once they are well-established on the crop.
Control measures
Managing the cotton aphid requires a multi-faceted approach to minimize reliance on chemicals and prevent resistance:
- Regular field scouting to detect infestation at the early stages.
- Weed control, as many weeds act as primary reservoirs for aphids.
- Conservation and augmentation of biological control agents like lady beetles and lacewings.
