Description
Systematic position: The Old World bollworm (scientifically known as Helicoverpa armigera, often historically referenced as Gossypina glauca) is classified within the order Lepidoptera, family Noctuidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests globally, characterized by its high mobility and polyphagous nature.
Crops affected: This pest is known for its extreme dietary diversity, feeding on a wide variety of economically important crops. Major hosts include cotton, maize, tomatoes, soybeans, chickpeas, and various horticultural crops. Its ability to infest almost every part of the plant makes it particularly difficult to manage in large-scale farming.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The female moth lays hundreds of eggs on the surface of host plants. After hatching, the larvae undergo multiple instars, feeding voraciously. The pest typically overwinters as a pupa in the soil, emerging as an adult once environmental conditions become favorable.
Nature of damage: Damage is primarily caused by the larval stage. Larvae bore into buds, flowers, and fruit, significantly reducing crop yields and quality. By feeding internally, the larvae remain protected from contact insecticides and adverse weather, which often leads to the destruction of the reproductive parts of the plant and substantial economic losses for farmers.
Protection measures: Controlling this pest requires an integrated approach. Cultural methods include crop rotation and deep plowing to expose pupae to predators and winter conditions. Biological control utilizing parasitic wasps like Trichogramma is highly effective. Chemical control should be based on economic thresholds, utilizing targeted insecticides to minimize impact on beneficial insects and prevent the development of resistance.
