Bromeliad armored scale

The bromeliad armored scale (Gymnaspis aechmeae) is a member of the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. It is a specialized pest primarily affecting indoor collections and greenhouse-grown ornamental plants.

This pest mainly targets species within the Bromeliaceae family. Key host plants include various cultivars of Aechmea, Neoregelia, and Billbergia, which are valued for their striking foliage and inflorescences in interior landscaping.

The biological development involves a crawler stage, where the young insect actively moves to find an ideal feeding site. Once settled, the insect begins to form a characteristic hard shell or scale, which serves as a protective barrier against predators and many environmental influences.

Symptoms of infestation include the appearance of small circular lesions, discoloration of leaves, and overall stunted growth. Feeding causes physiological stress to the plant, leading to cell death and potential loss of the entire leaf if the infestation density is high.

Control strategies require a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Systematic insecticides applied as a root drench or foliar spray are highly effective. Due to the protective scale cover, it is essential to perform repeated applications to manage successive generations as they emerge.
