Gymnetis beetle

Gymnetis is a genus of beetles belonging to the subfamily Cetoniinae (flower beetles) within the family Scarabaeidae (scarab beetles) and the order Coleoptera. While many species are native to tropical regions of the Americas, they are recognized for their potential to impact both ornamental plants and agricultural crops by consuming plant tissues.

The primary concern regarding Gymnetis is the feeding behavior of the adults. These beetles are attracted to flowering plants, where they feed on pollen, petals, and developing buds. By damaging reproductive organs, they interfere with the pollination process and fruit set, which can lead to significant yield losses in fruit-bearing trees and ornamental blooms.

The life cycle of these beetles includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae are typically soil-dwelling and feed on decomposing organic matter, which is generally considered beneficial for soil health. However, in high densities, they may occasionally impact the root systems of young plants, while the adults pose the most visible threat to the foliage and flowers.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by irregular chewing patterns on blossoms and fruits. Adult feeding often leaves deep scars or pits in the flesh of fruits, which may promote secondary infestations by pathogens or other pests. Monitoring is essential during the flowering season to prevent extensive damage to the crop.
