While often found in natural environments feeding on organic matter, it can become an occasional pest in agricultural and horticultural settings when conditions favor its proliferation.

The host range of Gymnetis pantherina primarily includes flowering ornamental plants, fruit trees, and occasionally vegetable seedlings. Adult beetles are primarily attracted to pollen, nectar, and soft plant tissues, including petals and buds. When population densities are high, the feeding activity of these beetles can lead to severe disfigurement of flowers and a subsequent reduction in fruit production due to the destruction of reproductive structures.

The lifecycle of this beetle involves complete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs in soils rich in decomposing organic material, including mulch, compost heaps, and decaying wood.
