Description
The genus Heilipus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These insects are well-known in tropical agriculture as significant pests of fruit crops, with the most notable species, Heilipus lauri, causing major damage to avocado (Persea americana) production in various regions.
These weevils are highly specialized feeders. The adults primarily feed on the tender parts of the host plant, while the larvae are internal fruit feeders. This internal feeding habit makes them particularly challenging to manage, as they remain protected within the fruit tissue for the duration of their larval stage.
The life cycle begins when the female weevil uses her rostrum to bore a hole into the fruit, depositing an egg. Upon hatching, the larva bores deeper into the fruit, often tunneling directly toward the seed. As the larva grows, it consumes the pulp and the seed, which disrupts the fruit's development and usually leads to premature abscission.
Damage assessment reveals that infested fruits display small, circular holes on the surface. These entry points often become entryways for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to fruit rot. Due to the larvae living inside, the exterior of the fruit may appear relatively normal at first glance until the damage is advanced.
Effective management strategies against Heilipus require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Rigorous sanitation: immediate collection and destruction of all fallen or damaged fruit to break the life cycle.
- Regular orchard scouting to detect early signs of egg-laying or adult activity.
- Application of selective insecticides during the peak fruiting season to target adults before oviposition.
- Use of physical barriers or bagging fruits in high-value, small-scale orchards to prevent egg-laying.
