The white-spotted avocado weevil (Heilipus albopictus) is a destructive species of weevil belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This pest is recognized in tropical regions as a specialized phytophage capable of causing significant economic losses in commercial avocado plantations by directly damaging the harvested crop.

Its primary host plants belong to the Lauraceae family, specifically avocado (Persea americana). The larvae develop within the tissues of the fruits, stems, and seeds, which protects them from many contact insecticides. Adult beetles also feed on young shoots, leading to stunted growth, deformation of the plant architecture, and a reduction in overall orchard vitality.

The life cycle of this pest is synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Females deposit eggs into the skin of developing fruits or the bark of branches. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel deep into the pulp, eventually reaching the seed, which they partially or fully consume. Pupation typically occurs within the fruit, after which the adult emerges through an exit hole to begin the next generation.

Damage is characterized by distinct puncture marks and necrotic lesions on the fruit surface. Internally, the larvae destroy the flesh and the seed, leading to premature fruit drop and making the produce completely unmarketable. Furthermore, these feeding tunnels serve as entry points for opportunistic pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, which trigger secondary decay and rot.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach including:

• Regular monitoring of orchard populations using visual inspection.
• Rigorous sanitation, including the removal and destruction of fallen fruit.
• Application of systemic insecticides during peak periods of adult beetle activity.
• Implementing cultural practices that improve canopy ventilation and tree health.
