Avocado weevil

Heilipus apiatus is a significant pest belonging to the Curculionidae family (Order: Coleoptera). This species is primarily recognized for its destructive impact on avocado orchards, posing a severe threat to commercial production in various regions of South America and other subtropical areas where it is prevalent.

The primary host plant is the avocado (Persea americana). The insect demonstrates a high level of host specificity, with both adults and larvae causing damage to different parts of the plant. While adults feed on young shoots and buds, the most severe damage is inflicted by the larvae, which bore into the fruit and occasionally the stems.

The biology of the pest involves a complete metamorphosis. Female weevils lay eggs within the host tissue, and upon hatching, larvae tunnel deep into the fruit to feed. The developmental stages are continuous in warm climates, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the year, which makes management efforts particularly challenging.

The economic impact of the avocado weevil is significant. Larval tunneling ruins the internal quality of the fruit, rendering it unmarketable and susceptible to rot. Furthermore, severe infestations in the woody parts of the tree can obstruct vascular tissues, leading to reduced vigor, branch dieback, and increased fruit drop, which translates into substantial revenue loss.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies:
