Fruit weevil Heilipus

Heilipus bonelli belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized pest that poses a serious threat to the cultivation of various fruit crops in tropical and subtropical regions. Adult specimens are characterized by a specific rostrum structure and coloration, which allows them to effectively camouflage themselves on the bark of trees.

The main targets for this species are fruit trees, particularly members of the Lauraceae family, such as avocado. Both the adult beetles and their larvae cause significant damage to both reproductive organs and vegetative parts of the plant, leading to a substantial decrease in fruit marketability and general weakening of the trees in the orchard.

The life cycle of the pest involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs directly into the tissues of the bark or fruit. The emerging larvae burrow deep into the plant tissues, where they feed and develop, creating a network of galleries. After completing their development, the larva pupates within the damaged area, followed by the emergence of a new generation of adults.

The damage caused by Heilipus bonelli lies in the disruption of sap flow and nutrient transport within the tree. Affected fruits often become deformed, rot, or drop prematurely. In areas of bark damage, secondary infections caused by fungal or bacterial pathogens may occur, which often leads to the death of individual branches or even the entire tree if the pest population density is high.

An integrated approach is used for effective crop protection.
