Description
Systematic position. Heilipus catagraphus is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (true weevils). This insect is highly specialized and is recognized as a primary pest in regions where avocado is cultivated.
Host plants. The primary host for this weevil is the avocado tree (Persea americana). It feeds on various parts of the plant, including shoots and flowers, but the most significant impact is observed on the developing fruits, which serve as the substrate for larval development.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs into the fruit tissue. After hatching, the larvae tunnel into the flesh towards the seed, consuming the fruit's nutritional components throughout their developmental stage until they pupate.
Damage and economic impact. The infestation leads to substantial fruit loss. The feeding activity of the larvae destroys the pulp, leading to fruit decay and premature fruit drop. This damage not only directly reduces the harvest volume but also results in secondary infections, rendering the remaining fruits commercially unmarketable.
Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize damage:
- Rigorous orchard sanitation by removing and destroying infested fruits.
- Regular scouting and monitoring to detect early populations of adults.
- Targeted application of insecticides during peak activity periods.
- Encouragement of natural predators that may reduce population growth in the orchard.
