Avocado seed weevil

Heilipus lauri, commonly known as the avocado seed weevil, is a specialized pest that poses a significant threat to commercial avocado production. This beetle belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Its distribution is primarily concentrated in Central and South American regions, where it can cause severe yield losses if not properly managed.

The primary host crop is the avocado (Persea americana). This pest exhibits high host specificity, primarily targeting the fruit and seeds of the plant. Without appropriate control measures, the population of the insect can proliferate rapidly, resulting in direct financial losses for large-scale agricultural enterprises and small-scale farmers involved in fruit export.

The life cycle encompasses the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female creates punctures in the fruit skin to deposit her eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the pulp and migrate toward the seed, which serves as their primary food source throughout their development. Once feeding is complete, the larva pupates within the seed or the pulp, eventually emerging as an adult beetle.

The damage caused by this pest is characterized by multiple puncture wounds on the avocado skin, which often facilitate secondary infections by fungi and bacteria. The internal tissues are destroyed by larval galleries, rendering the fruit unmarketable. Severe seed damage typically leads to premature fruit drop and a significant reduction in overall fruit quality and shelf life.

Control strategies involve a comprehensive integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• Regular orchard monitoring using pheromone traps.
• Frequent visual inspections of fruit batches.
• Sanitation, including the prompt collection and destruction of fallen or infested fruit to break the life cycle.
• Judicious use of insecticides, applied strictly according to safety protocols to ensure no harmful residues remain on the harvested product.
