Avocado weevil

Heilipus unifasciatus is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Known primarily as a specialized pest of avocado (Persea americana), it causes severe economic losses in tropical and subtropical orchard regions, particularly across Latin America.

The primary host for this weevil is the avocado tree. The pest exhibits a high level of host specificity, focusing its reproductive and feeding activities on the fruits of the avocado tree, although adult beetles may occasionally feed on tender bark and young shoots, causing additional stress to the host plants.

The life cycle of the Heilipus unifasciatus is characterized by complete metamorphosis. Adult females utilize their specialized mouthparts to bore into the skin of the developing fruit to lay their eggs. Once hatched, the larvae bore through the pulp to reach the seed, feeding extensively on the fruit's interior, which disrupts the normal development of the avocado.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily internal. The presence of larvae leads to internal rotting, tissue necrosis, and often premature fruit drop. These fruits are strictly non-marketable and suffer from significant quality degradation, making them prone to opportunistic secondary pathogens which rot the fruit completely.

Management and control strategies are essential for sustainable avocado production:

• Field monitoring to detect adult feeding and oviposition punctures on the fruit surface.
• Cultural practices such as the prompt removal and destruction of fallen or infested fruit to break the larval cycle.
• Application of targeted insecticides during the active flight periods of adult weevils to prevent new infestations.
• Biological control through the use of entomopathogenic fungi or naturally occurring parasitoid wasps that target the larval stages.
