Ash scale

Ash scale (Hemiberlesia fraxini) is a scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae, order Hemiptera. It is a significant pest of woody plants, particularly ash trees (Fraxinus). Like other armored scales, it is protected by a tough, waxy covering that makes it resilient to many external environmental factors and conventional contact pesticides.

The primary host plants for this species include various species of ash trees found in forests, urban parklands, and nurseries. The pest typically colonizes the bark of stems and branches. While often overlooked due to its camouflage, severe infestations can drastically impact the physiological health of the host, leading to long-term decline.

The biology of the pest involves specific life stages: eggs, mobile nymphs known as "crawlers," and sessile adults. The crawler stage is critical for population dispersal, as these tiny nymphs move across the bark to find suitable feeding sites. Once a site is chosen, they insert their mouthparts into the plant tissue and remain fixed for the rest of their development, secreting a protective shield.

The damage caused by the Ash scale is primarily due to the extraction of plant sap. Feeding activities drain the tree of vital nutrients, resulting in shoot dieback, stunted growth, and canopy thinning. In urban or landscape settings, this pest can diminish the aesthetic value of trees and increase their susceptibility to secondary pathogens like wood-boring beetles or fungal diseases.

To effectively manage and control the Ash scale, a multi-faceted approach is recommended:

• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local population levels.
• Timing insecticide applications to coincide with the crawler emergence window.
• Using systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the tree tissues.
• Applying dormant oil sprays during the winter or early spring to smother overwintering nymphs.
