Gliwice scale

The Gliwice scale (Hemiberlesia gliwicensis) belongs to the family Diaspididae within the order Hemiptera. This armored scale insect is a specialized pest that feeds on the bark of various woody plants, often causing decline in the health and vigor of host trees and shrubs.

This species primarily targets a range of deciduous woody plants. Due to their small size and the protective covering they construct, these insects often go unnoticed until a significant population density has developed, resulting in visible damage to the infested trees.

The biological cycle of the Gliwice scale is closely linked to climatic conditions. The overwintering stage typically occurs as nymphs under the protective armor. Upon the arrival of warmer temperatures, the insects emerge or resume feeding, leading to the reproduction and spread of new generations throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by these insects is a direct result of sap extraction from the bark tissues. This feeding process causes localized dehydration, leading to cracks, necrotic lesions, and eventually dieback of branches. Severe infestations can significantly weaken the tree's natural defense mechanisms against secondary pathogens.
