Description
Systematic position. The Lataste scale (Hemiberlesia latastei) belongs to the family Diaspididae (armored scales), within the order Hemiptera. It is a tiny insect characterized by a hard, protective covering (scale), which shields it from environmental factors and makes it challenging to treat with contact pesticides.
Host plants. This species is a polyphage, primarily attacking a wide variety of fruit and ornamental woody plants. It is frequently observed on members of the Rosaceae family, citrus trees, and various evergreen species thriving in regions with mild or Mediterranean climates.
Biology and lifecycle. The insect undergoes several developmental stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. The crawler stage is the primary mobile phase; these nymphs actively move across the bark to find a suitable feeding site. Once settled, the insect begins secreting a protective wax shield, becoming sedentary for the remainder of its life cycle.
Nature of damage and pest status. While feeding, both nymphs and adult females inject toxins into the plant tissues. This process leads to gradual nutrient depletion, causing shoot dieback, leaf yellowing, and premature senescence. Infestations often manifest as cracked bark, stunted growth, and significantly reduced crop yield or plant vigor.
Protection measures. Controlling the Lataste scale requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Essential measures include regular pruning and destruction of infested branches to reduce population density. Chemical interventions are most effective during the crawler emergence phase using systemic or contact insecticides, as well as dormant oil sprays in early spring.
