Poplar scale

Systematic position: Poplar scale (Hemiberlesia popularum) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Diaspididae family. These insects are characterized by a protective, waxy covering (shield) that they secrete over their bodies, which serves as a highly effective barrier against environmental stressors and many traditional chemical pesticides.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest are species of the genus Populus (poplars). However, the scale can also infest other deciduous trees, including willows. They typically colonize the bark of stems, branches, and occasionally twigs, where they feed by inserting their stylets into the living plant tissue.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves distinct stages: egg, nymph (crawler), and adult. Females usually overwinter as mated adults or in the first instar stage. In the spring, they resume feeding, and as temperatures rise, reproduction begins. The most critical phase for management is the 'crawler' stage, as these young nymphs are mobile and lack the hardened protective shield, making them susceptible to control measures.

Damage and severity: By constantly extracting plant sap, Hemiberlesia popularum causes significant physiological stress to the tree. Heavy infestations result in chlorosis, reduced vigor, bark cracking, and localized necrosis. In severe cases, the persistent feeding can lead to branch dieback and, if left untreated, the gradual decline and death of the entire tree.

Management strategies: Controlling scale insects requires a multi-faceted approach tailored to the pest's developmental stages:

• Dormant season oil sprays to suffocate overwintering individuals.
• Systemic insecticide applications during the active growing season.
• Timed sprays during the emergence of crawlers to maximize mortality rates.
• Sanitation practices, including pruning and removal of heavily infested wood to reduce population density.
