Japanese scarab

The Japanese scarab (Heptophylla picea) is a significant soil-dwelling pest belonging to the Scarabaeidae family, within the order Coleoptera. It is a well-known threat in agricultural ecosystems, particularly in East Asia. The adult beetles are often nocturnal, while their larvae remain hidden beneath the soil surface, making them a challenging pest to manage effectively.

This species is highly polyphagous and affects a broad range of crops. Major agricultural targets include soybeans, peanuts, wheat, and young forest nurseries. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, feeding aggressively on the root systems of crops, which leads to stunted growth or total plant failure depending on the infestation level.

The life cycle typically spans one to two years, encompassing egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. The larvae overwinter deep in the soil and migrate toward the root zone as temperatures rise in the spring. This seasonal vertical movement in the soil profile is a critical factor for timing control applications.

Damage assessment reveals that infested plants display nutrient deficiency symptoms, such as yellowing leaves and sudden wilting. Because the roots are severely chewed or severed, affected plants can be easily pulled from the soil. Yield loss can be substantial, often resulting in patchy crop stands that are economically devastating for farmers.

To effectively manage populations, a multi-faceted approach is required:

• Tillage practices that expose larvae to predators and desiccation.
• Use of registered soil-applied insecticides during planting seasons.
• Integration of biological controls, specifically entomopathogenic fungi like Beauveria bassiana.
• Monitoring adult flight periods using light traps to predict potential larval density for the following season.
