Heteroborips seriatus

Description

Heteroborips seriatus is a dangerous species of insect pests belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. Previously, this species was classified under the genus Xyleborus. It is a small beetle that poses a significant threat to tree species by penetrating deep into the trunk tissues and disrupting the plant's vital physiological processes.

The pest affects a wide range of deciduous and coniferous tree species. It is most commonly reported to infest various species of oak, maple, and chestnut, as well as some orchard fruit crops. These beetles show high activity in weakened forest stands, but during outbreaks, they are capable of attacking healthy and vigorous individual trees as well.

The biology of this species is closely tied to the cultivation of symbiotic fungi, which the beetles feed on inside the wood. Adult individuals bore galleries into the xylem, where females lay their eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the fungus grown by the parents and develop inside the trunk, which makes them extremely difficult to reach with external treatments or conventional contact insecticides.

The damage caused manifests as small entrance holes in the bark, with traces of frass often visible around them. The pest disrupts the integrity of the tree's vascular system, leading to the gradual dieback of branches, yellowing and shedding of leaves, and ultimately the death of the entire plant. Mass infestations often result in irreversible loss of timber and plant health.

Comprehensive protection measures are used to control this pest. Key methods include:

  • timely sanitary felling and removal of infested trees;
  • use of pheromone traps for monitoring and reducing the adult population;
  • maintaining high agricultural standards to improve the resistance of plantings;
  • application of systemic insecticides when necessary during the active flight period of the beetles.
