Description

The Nettle bug (scientific name Heterogaster urticae) is a true bug belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Heterogastridae. As its name suggests, it is primarily associated with the stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), which serves as its main host plant. However, it can expand its range to various agricultural and ornamental crops when conditions are favorable.

While the pest prefers wild plants, it can become a nuisance for berry crops, including raspberries and blackberries. The bug uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the plant sap. This process removes vital nutrients from the host plant, often resulting in reduced vigor, poor fruit set, and overall weakening of the plant structure.

The life cycle of Heterogaster urticae follows a typical hemimetabolous pattern. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as leaf litter, hedge bottoms, or under tree bark. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge, mate, and lay eggs on host plants. The nymphs undergo several molts as they grow into adults, with the entire cycle timed to coincide with the availability of succulent vegetation.

The damage caused by the nettle bug is often visible as chlorotic spotting on leaves and distorted shoot growth. Because the insects feed in groups, they can cause localized wilting and premature leaf drop. In high-density populations, the accumulation of feeding punctures can significantly impact the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to decreased yields.

Management and protection strategies require an integrated approach to pest control:

  • Sanitation practices, such as removing nettle patches near valuable crops.
  • Cleaning up garden debris during autumn to eliminate hibernation sites.
  • Regular field monitoring to detect early signs of infestation.
