Heteronychus arator, commonly known as the African black beetle, is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. This beetle is notorious for its destructive impact on various crops, particularly in regions with temperate and subtropical climates where it has established large, resilient populations.

The host range of the African black beetle is extensive, covering a variety of economically important species. Major crops prone to damage include maize, sugarcane, potatoes, wheat, and diverse vegetable crops. Furthermore, the beetle is a frequent nuisance in turf management, causing significant damage to lawns and pastures by feeding on grass roots near the soil surface.

The life cycle of Heteronychus arator consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are robust, shiny black beetles capable of flight, which aids in their dispersal. They usually overwinter in the soil, emerging in spring to mate. The larval stage, or grub, spends its entire development period in the soil, feeding on organic matter and living roots, which makes them difficult to target without systematic observation.

The primary damage is caused by the adults, which burrow into the soil at the base of young plants, causing stem damage. This feeding behavior often leads to the death of young seedlings shortly after emergence. In mature plants, root pruning by larvae can result in reduced nutrient uptake, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to water stress and environmental factors, ultimately leading to significant yield losses.

Management strategies for this pest include a combination of chemical and cultural methods. Seed treatments with systemic insecticides provide essential protection for young seedlings. In cases of severe infestation, granular insecticide applications at the time of planting are necessary.
