Description

Systematic position: The Heteronychus oryzae belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This beetle is a significant subterranean pest known for causing economic damage to cereal crops across tropical and subtropical environments.

Crops damaged: While rice is the primary host, this pest also causes severe damage to maize, sorghum, and sugarcane. Its feeding habits target the base of the stems and the root systems of young plants, frequently leading to stand failure in infested fields.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are typically soil-dwelling and nocturnal. Females lay their eggs in moist soil containing organic matter, where the larvae develop. Larvae feed primarily on roots, while the adults cause the most visible damage by burrowing into the stems of growing plants.

Damage and harmfulness: Adults bore into the base of stems, causing the central shoot to wither, a condition commonly referred to as "dead heart." This damage severely stunts plant growth, reduces tillering, and can cause plant death if infestations occur during the early vegetative stages.
