The Hexarthrum ulkei is a species of weevil belonging to the family Curculionidae, within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized primarily as a wood-boring insect that targets weakened or decaying woody plants. While it plays a natural ecological role in forest decomposition, it can become a significant nuisance in orchards, nurseries, and managed landscapes.

This pest prefers deciduous trees that are already compromised by environmental stress, diseases, or previous physical damage. The weevil infestation typically targets the trunks and larger branches of trees. In dense or neglected garden settings, the insect finds optimal conditions for reproduction, leading to localized outbreaks that threaten the structural integrity of the affected trees.

The biological cycle of this weevil involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females deposit their eggs in bark crevices, and the emerging larvae bore deep into the xylem. By consuming the wood from the inside out, they create intricate tunnel networks that significantly weaken the tree's internal architecture over time.

Symptoms include wilting, chlorosis, and the emergence of fine wood shavings near exit holes on the bark.
