Hirschmanniella loofi is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Pratylenchidae within the order Tylenchida. It is recognized as an specialized endoparasite, primarily affecting the root systems of aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation. This species is often found in flooded agricultural environments, particularly within rice-growing regions.
The primary host for Hirschmanniella loofi is rice (Oryza sativa). In addition to the commercial crop, the nematode can inhabit the roots of various wild grasses and sedges commonly found in wetlands. These alternative hosts play a critical role in the pest's survival cycle, ensuring the persistence of the population in the field between crop seasons.
The biological cycle of this nematode is heavily dependent on moisture. The life cycle comprises eggs, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The nematodes are capable of migrating through the soil and into the plant roots, where they feed on cortical cells. Their physiological ability to survive in water-saturated environments allows them to thrive in paddy fields.
